- The rare earth metals or elements are shown in a special segment of the periodic table labeled as lanthanoids or lanthanides. They include Lanthanum, Cerium, Praseodymium, Neodymium, Promethium, Samarium, Europium, Gadolinium,Terbium, Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium, Thulium, Ytterbium, and Lutetium.
- Lanthanum used in camera lenses, glass manufacturing, hydrogen storage
- Europium is used cathode ray televisions (flat screen televisions), used in Light Emitting Diodes (LED lights), amplifies the pulse in optical data fibers, amplifies laser light with no heat enhancement, used in making "pink" glass.
- Neodymium - used in making powerful magnetic alloys for magnets used in MP3 players and other portable music players and magnets for Wind Turbines, used in oil drilling and as a glass colorant.
- Yttrium oxide is used in oxygen probes
- Erbium is used in night vision goggles, laser beams and fibre optics
- Praseodymium is also used in coloring glass and in ceramic glazes, used in magnets and lasers
- Cerium - polishing powder and in water purification
- Gadolinium used in lasers, x-ray tubes, enhancing computer memory, magnets, glass manufacturing
- Terbium used in lasers and fluorescent lamps
- Dysprosium used in magnets and laser manufacturing as is Erbium and Holmium. Also used in making control rods in nuclear reactors and in data storage devices.
- Thulium is used in x-ray machines and lasers- Ytterbium used in laser s and high temperature super conductors and steel production and in gamma rays
- Lutetium is used in nuclear technology and as a catalyst in various chemical reactions
